This film is an adaptation of a novel, which itself is the adaptation of a true story. The movie is based on the nonfiction novel, "The Orchid Thief" by Susan Orlean. The novel tells the story of a plant dealer who finds and steals rare orchids, hoping to reproduce them and sell them at exorbitant rates. The central character of the movie is a man who is assigned to write the screenplay of the novel for movie adaptation. He is an insecure man who is having difficulty writing an acceptable script. His twin brother, also a screenwriter, becomes involved in helping him finish this assignment. During their quest, they learn about the book author's involvement with the orchid thief, and discover secrets that endanger their lives. The MPAA rating is R for language, sexuality, drug use and violent images. The language gets increasingly worse as the story becomes more complex. There is frontal female nudity and rear male nudity and three scenes which each show the couple engaging in sex. None of the sexual encounters are within the confines of marriage. A pornographic web site is part of the story line and pictures of naked women are shown. Firearms are used and there are at least two cases of drug use. The opening scenes show time-lapse photography of a decaying animal and also show the beginning stages of childbirth. Two violent car accidents are shown which both involve fatalities, one of which involves some bloody gore.
