In this drama set in 1984 England, a young boy finds himself drawn more to dancing than to boxing. His pursuit of ballet lessons draws the ire of his father, a widowed coal minor struggling to provide for his two sons and their elderly grandmother in the midst of a turbulent strike. The boy's mother has died and his elderly grandmother is the only female figure in his life until his dance teacher takes an interest in developing his talent. She agrees to conduct secret lessons for him in preparation for an audition for the Royal Ballet School in London. This story tells the classic tale of a youth seeking to follow his heart rather than conform to his father's, his neighbor's and society's expectations. The MPAA rating is "R" for language, most of which is incorporated to accurately depict the conversational style of coal minors. The father strikes both the boy and his brother in three separate scenes. There is some sexually explicit dialogue among the boy and his friends. The boy is approached by a young girl and by his young male friend, both of whom are intrigued by his style. Strike scenes show angry crowds being confronted by police with shield and billy clubs. Alcohol is consumed, and the boys try drinking at one point. The relationship between the boy, his father, and his dreams is the central theme of this picture.
