MovieDescription: BEYOND THE GATES Cast: Hugh Dancy, John Hurt, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Nicola Walker, Jack Pierce. Directed by Michael Caton-Jones. In this drama, a young man comes to Rwanda to teach just prior to the political coup that sparks the 1994 genocide. When his private school becomes a haven for thousands of Rwandans fleeing the guerillas, he promises a young student that the UN soldiers will protect her from the militia. But when the UN abandons its post at the schoolalong with abandoning the refugeesthe teacher and headmaster must decide whether to join the other expatriates leaving the country or stay behind. The MPAA has rated this film R for violence, disturbing images and language. Mild to strong language and racial epithets are used throughout the film. The inhumane behaviors of the militiamen are shown. Militiamen use guns and machetes to maim and kill, slashing, decapitating, or cutting off hands, arms or legs of innocent victims. Bodies are left in the streets to rot. Bodies outside the gates of the school soon attract wild dogs who tear and eat at their flesh. Despite the pleas of refugees, the UN soldiers refuse to allocate guns or bullets to the refugees for their defense.
