In this drama set in the 1600's, a boy, who is born into poverty, aspires to be a great artist. The MPAA rates this movie "PG" for mild violence, mild language and thematic elements. Language is not a major factor in this film. A tired dog that is unmercifully beaten by a cruel man and left to die is rescued. An ill mother dies in the presence of her father and infant son. An abusive man seriously threatens another man with a large cleaver. An out of control barn fire is featured. A child's life is in danger when he is lost in a blizzard. The main character's story is complex and his life very difficult.
