This film is a snapshot of the early days of broadcast journalism, its politics and its sponsors. It documents the conflict between CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy and his House Un-American Activities Committee. Determined to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow and his producers defy threats from the military and from CBS sponsors to do just that. The MPAA has rated this movie PG for thematic elements and language. There are one or two instances of strong language. A newsroom couple keep their marriage a secret so they can continue to work together. All main characters smoke cigarettes, on and off the air. Social drinking is also common. One of the journalists, just divorced from his wife, is unable to stand up under the pressure of being called a communist sympathizer and eventually commits suicide. Viewers see him prepare the stove in a flashback as the dialogue reports his death.
