MovieDescription: AN AMERICAN HAUNTING Cast: Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Hurd-Wood. Directed by Courtney Solomon. Based loosely on recorded events from America circa 1800s, a family is terrorized by supernatural events occurring in their Tennessee farmhouse aimed largely at the adolescent daughter and the father. Events unfold and the mother receives an epiphany, which leads to the end of the haunting. The MPAA has rated the film PG-13 for intense terror sequences and thematic material. The film features many frightening scenes, which include surprise starts, ghostly voices, acts by demons, sounds and disturbances in the home. At the beginning of the film the majority of the terrorizing is aimed at an adolescent girl, including scenes of a demon trying to get into her bed. The spirit appears to be physically fighting the girl in several sequences. Other scenes show the girl writhing in pain and, at times, appearing to be possessed by a demon. Ghostly figures appear, disappear and reappear. Supernatural forces destroy property, create disturbances in the home and hold people in rooms against their will. Brief images of a demonic-looking child are depicted. Some scenes show a wild wolf attacking people. Weapons used in the film include a shotgun fired at the wolf and a handgun used unsuccessfully in a suicide attempt. References to witchcraft are included in the film. Mature thematic elements include incest and sexual abuse perpetrated against the girl. While no nudity is shown, one scene clearly depicts a girl who has been brutally raped and is bleeding from the vaginal area. A man dies after being poisoned by another character. The film includes no profanity, drug or alcohol abuse.
